BIOGRAPHY

NOVAK DJOKOVIC

Novak is a Serbian professional tennis player, who is currently ranked world number 2. He was born in Belgrade in 1987.
He started playing tennis when he was 4 years old and he played his first international competition when he was fourteen. 3 years ago Djoković defeated Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the final, becoming the first player representing Serbia to win a Grand Slam singles title and the youngest player in the open era to have reached the semifinals of all four Grand Slam events.

Although his father wanted he to become a football player or a skier  he decided to be a tennis player because he loved the sport since he was a child.

His streghths are his groundstrokes, serve and defence. He is good with both arms but his backhand is his preferred stroke. At th esame time, his serve is one of his best weapons. He has won many free points with it.
So his best shot is backhand down the line. And  although he can play in any surface he prefers hard courts.
He has won several tournaments since he first played tennis, most known are Australian Open in 2008 and the bronze medal in th eOñympic Games of Beijin.

GENERAL INFORMATION

DEFINITION

Tennis is a sport played between two players (singles) or between two teams of two players each (doubles). Each player uses a racquet to strike a hollow rubber ball over a net into the opponent’s field.


 
ORIGIN

The modern game of tennis originated in the United Kingdom in the late 19th century. After its creation, tennis spread throughout the upper-class English-speaking population before spreading around the world.[1]  Tennis is an Olympic sport and is played at all levels of society at all ages. The sport can be played by anyone who can hold a racket, including people in wheelchairs.



 




HOW TO PLAY 

The objective of the game is to strike a ball over the net into the opponent’s field. The player who scores more points wins.


 








EQUIPMENT NEEDED

Players need a racquet and balls to play tennis.
The tennis racquet consists of a handle and a neck that joins a circular frame with strings.
Tennis balls are of hollow rubber covered with felt. They are usually Optic Yellow, to see them better.
 

Where to play
Tennis is played on a rectangular, flat surface, usually grass, clay or concrete. 
The court is 23,77m long and 8,23m wide for single matches; and 10,97m wide for doubles. The court is divided by a 1,07m high net.




 
Scoring:
A tennis match is divided in 3 or 5 sets. Each set is divided in games.

COMPETITIONS

Although there are lots and lots tennis championships, most important events are 1) Grand Slam Tournaments such as The Australian Open, Roland Garros, Wimbledon and the US Open, and 2) ATP World Tour Masters.

TENNIS PLAYERS

Most well known female players are Venus and Serena Williams and Maria Sharapova. As male tennis players concern  Rafa Nadal, Roger Federer and Novak Jokovic are the greatest.
